Portfolio monitoring for private equity
Every quarter the portfolio companies send their statements. Read them into one spread instead of a new spreadsheet each time.
SpreadSpaceâ„¢ reads the monthly and quarterly financial statements, the annual audited statements and the tax returns each portfolio company sends, and spreads them under the presentation your firm uses. Each new period takes its place beside the earlier ones, and every figure keeps a link to the page it came from.
Build the leverage and coverage measures your team watches, compare a company's periods and its peers, and carry the exhibits into the quarterly update in your firm's template. Work in SpreadSpace or embed the workspace in the portfolio system your team already uses.
Read each period's statements as they arrive
Upload the statements a portfolio company sends for the period, from a management report or an export from its accounting system to the audited year-end set. SpreadSpace reads the supported statements and keeps each company, period and unit identifiable.
The annual tax return and the debt schedule enter the same review, so the return's figures can be compared with the book statements for the same year.
Keep one presentation across periods and companies
Map each company's reported lines to your firm's chart of accounts once and the presentation holds for every later period. Save the spread configuration and apply it to the next company rather than rebuilding the arrangement.
The reported lines stay behind the mapped figures, so a change in a company's own captions or presentation is visible rather than hidden.
Compare the periods and open the source
Each period's figures sit beside the earlier ones. When revenue, margin or working capital moves, the analyst opens the figure and lands on the page of the statement that reported it.
Derived figures show their contributing rows. The question of what a total includes is answered in the spread, not in a call to the company's controller.
Build the measures your team watches
Use the spreadsheet to define leverage, coverage and liquidity measures from the spread's figures and carry them forward period by period. The historical inputs stay source-linked as the team adds its own calculations and projections.
Adjusted EBITDA follows the same rule as in diligence. The analyst chooses the add-backs, and the spread shows each one beside the reported figure it adjusts.
Write the quarterly update in your template
Upload the update your partners and limited partners already read, as a PDF or Word document, and SpreadSpace reproduces its structure as a reusable template. Bring the period's exhibits into it and write the commentary around them.
Finalizing records the version that went out. Reopening it for a later change is an explicit, recorded step, so the history shows what was issued and what changed.
Bring the work into your portfolio system
Use the native workspace or embed the review in the portfolio management application your team already runs. An integration can retrieve each finalized spread as a versioned record, so the figures your reports rely on come from the reviewed spread rather than a copy.
See a quarter's statements land in the spread
Bring two periods of statements from one portfolio company and the update your partners read. Follow a figure from the new statements into the spread, the measures and the exhibit, and see what changed against the prior period.
